Get out the Bugs- Reveiw

One of the ladies who was the chorister before me in this area always did this activity for the end of the year- program reviews. She had large plastic bugs she had bought at the dollar store and would either put them in a large garbage bag or would put them on the board and use the garbage bag like a sheet. I got back from visiting my sister late Saturday and was trying to think of something to do the next morning. I even debated running to Walmart (being the only place open) and seeing if I could find large plastic bugs. My husband assured me that construction paper laminated would work just as well. They did. I found bug silhouettes on the internet. Enlarged them and printed them as large as I could and traced the outline onto the construction paper and cut it out. I then laminated them so that I can write the titles of the songs.
I grabbed a sheet to use to cover the bugs. Then the children have to search under the sheet to find a bug  (song). Since it was a sheet (and this came to me while I was standing in front of children), we were "getting the bugs out of our bed" because we don't want bugs in our bed.
The children were all about this. I had my Junior primary singing better than they have in months and singing songs that I wasn't even sure if they knew at all because they wouldn't sing it for be before. They were also so worried about the bugs still in the bed when our time was up. I promised them that we would finish getting the bugs out next week. I made a note of which songs were left (we got 4 of the 8 out). Senior primary were less enthusiastic about actually getting the bugs out. But they sang well to pass off the song, they all wanted to be picked to find a bug, and they enjoyed identifying the various types of bugs pulled out. The completed 6 of 8 songs.
I would call this one a success. If it works this well every time then no wonder my friend used this activity for her review EVERY year (and she was the chorister for 7 years in her ward).

instructions: have enough bugs for each song. if you have more or smaller bugs make some of them specific verses of the songs.
Tell the children we are getting the bugs out of their songs so that the songs are Program ready. Warn them that if they don't sing the song well enough then the bug is going to go back into our bed and will have to be found again. I gave them singing the song twice through before I placed the bug back under the sheet. If it was *just* one verse they were having problems with I would give them the chance to redeem themselves by re-singing that one verse before the bug went back.
I placed the bugs into my primary folder when they were passed off, but you could put them in a jar, a box, display them, or put them away.

Singing Fish Review

Singing Fish was one we did a few Sundays ago as a review.
The idea is to have "mama" fish and "baby" fish and have the children return the baby fish to their mama. Our children really enjoyed it, especially JR primary. When you match a baby to the mama you sing the verse that is written on the baby fish. Our JR primary were so upset when Singing Time was over and they were so worried about the babies that didn't get back to their mamas.
Here is the instructions and songs we used. I know that not everyone picked the same songs we did. But that means you only have 2 songs to pick lines from those verses.
Here are some sihloettes of fish that you can use as a guide to cut them out. I just free handed mine out of construction paper (oval with a triangle tail) then I drew on eyes and mouths.

Here is a picture of what my fish looked like.
Have fun reviewing and playing with singing fish.
*It doesn't have to be fish. It could be any animal or even people. It is just really easy to cut out fish.

Review activity "I HEAR with my little EAR"

I have a sub this Sunday. I have created a guessing game for her to practice the songs with the children.

Each song has a set of clues. Each clue was written to be given in the form "I hear with my little ear... a song that we........."
Here are the clues that I used. I know that many of you didn't pick the same two "you choose" songs as our ward did, but that means you only have two songs to make your own questions for. Use my questions as a guide. Ignore the (notes) those are for my sub.

Feel free to "Save Image As" my notes and use them for your Singing Times. Or make up your own specific to your primary. I hope this idea helps at least one Chorister out there.

Singing Time Jeopardy

picture stole from pinterst if it is yours sorry.
These are my questions and points. Over all I tried to make the questions more hard or more personal as the points increase. Instead of calling it a "daily double" I called it a "double dare" if they complete the dare they get double the points. You can split them into teams or as I like to do we as a primary are a team together to see how many points we can collectively get before our time is over. With the "double dare" if they will not complete the dare another child an do the dare for the points on the card. Another way to help sing more as part of this "singing time" is have the primary sing the verse the question goes to, then have the child answer the question.  I do not make the children answer the question in the form of a question.

Each song is its own category.

Singing Time Brain Teasers

I have been up in Mesa with my kids for the last two weeks. I thought I had prepared a lesson for tomorrow (it is currently 11:50 on Saturday night) but I can't remember what it is. Since I do not want to show up to church and look at my folder (which is there since I gave it to the sub and asked her to leave it there)  and then realized I never finished my lesson plans. I can't remember for the life of me what they were so I had to start from scratch tonight.

Next Sunday (5th Sunday- last Sunday of June) the Primary President wants me to use the ENTIRE time reviewing and singing with the kids. I plan on doing a "Jeopardy" like game. Each song is going to be a category. That is going to be most of the time and we are going to spend a little bit of time relearning the patriotic songs we sing at the ward 4th of July Breakfast- "My Flag, My Flag" and "My Country Tis of Thee". I did request that the Presidency member who would have Sharing Time plan a short (5 minutes) lesson to give me a break and to break up the singing for the kids because they are not going to want to sing the ENTIRE time.
So this Sunday:

I was thinking about brain teasers- like the ones below
I once did something similar. I had a brain teaser of the song on one page and another page with the song title. They then played concentration with them. I like the idea that the children have to figure out what the song is.
So I have spent my time tonight making up my versions of Brain Teasers with the 2013 Primary Program songs. I did them for the songs we're doing and I tried to find what most people are doing for their "You choose" songs so that everyone can use them. Can you figure them out without looking at the captions?
I am a child of God

My Heavenly Father Loves Me
If the Savior Stood Beside Me
The Sacred Grove

We Thank thee O God for a Prophet
When I am Baptized
Families Can Be Together Forever

A Child's Prayer
These are the others I included for those who aren't doing the same songs we are. If you are doing something other than this just ask and I will try to find the time to include your needs in here.Or make your own, I am sure many of you are much more creative than I am at thinking of these.

We'll Bring the World His Truth
Children Holding Hands around the world

Follow the Prophet

Joseph Smith's First Prayer

Upon a Golden Spring Time

Praise to the Man

The Priesthood is Restored

Stand for the Right

the Golden Plates

This is my Beloved Son

This is my Beloved Son
Book of Mormon Stories

Again if there is a song you would like me to try to add, comment and let me know I will try.
You can either click on the pictures you need/want and "save as" to your computer they should be in a 8.5*11 size or click here to download all in a zip file
I hope this helps someone. Enjoy

Disclaimer (confession)- picture of the children around the world I swiped from fellow chorister site. Check out her ideas too.

Teaching "When I am Baptized" Singing Time

The kids knew the song really well because they learned it last year.
I reminded them that the verses' notes go up slowing and then go down slowly (scales) and the notes can be visualized like a rainbow, hence we're talking about a rainbow. And then the chorus' notes jump up and down, like falling rain.
Here are the visuals I used. You can download them by right clicking on them and saving as to your computer. they should download to a printer paper size.
again my visuals are only black and white for printing and coloring yourself. Save your ink.
Verse 1
I like to look for rainbows
whenever there is rain
and ponder on the beauty
of an Earth made clean again.
Chorus
I want my life to be as clean
as Earth right after Rain
I want to be the best I can
and live with God again.

2nd verse
I know when I am baptized
my wrongs are washed away.
and I can be forgiven
and improve myself each day.
re-use or print twice the chorus visuals.
 Hope these help someone.
thanks for dropping by.

Teaching: If I listen With My Heart-Continued

So today actually went so much better than I thought. Thanks for all of your comments and ideas. I don't dislike the song itself, I just don't feel it is a whole primary song, it would be beautifully done by a YW small group. Also I think the song had been on lds.org, but it was lost when they started to redo the website, that's about all I can think of.
First: With the loss of time from Testimonies going over, and all the confusion from the first Sunday of the year, we started really late. I had brought my 'SUNS' to welcome our new Sunbeams and do wiggle songs with them. While the Primary Presidency was trying to get everyone where they needed to go, we started having our new Sunbeams pick 'Suns'. When it was time for Singing time we did a couple more then learned the Chorus to "If I Listen With My Heart", in the end I put a short bit of ASL (sign language) to go to the chorus. The little children too right to it and loved it. I will film myself doing it and put it on the blog for anyone who would like to see it. We ended JR doing one more wiggle song with our 'Suns'.
Second: Teaching the first verse to the SR primary went so much better than I worried, still not great. It is a hard song to learn, melody and words and all. But they were troopers. And I tried to have a positive outlook and energy for them.
Third: Before primary I talked to our Primary President and the councilors and expressed my feelings and asked for their thoughts. I suggested a number of suggestions (make it a musical number, have SR primary do the verses and JR just do chorus, do only one verse...) We discuses it a bit and said we'd talk about it after church. They all saw me teaching it, heard the song, ect. After church we talked and came to what I feel is the best conclusion. I feel so good about it. We are going to start our program with this song, the first verse is going to be a solo, we have the young girl picked out and feel so good about it. This young lady has a speak impediment. For almost a year now has been taking private voice lessons as a way to treat her speak impediment. Her mother had mentioned to one of the councilors that it would be wonderful if she had a chance to preform in one of our program's musical numbers since she doesn't get recital to preform and that way she could have something in her voice lessons to work towards. The second verse is going to be sung by a small group of our older girls with the young lady who sung the first verse. On the choruses and the 3rd verse the entire primary will sing. So now I only need to teach the third verse to the entire primary, and that is a bit less daunting then the whole song. As we spoke we all felt so good about this choice. When I told my husband I just felt so comforted that this was the best choice and the choice that was right for our primary. I am grateful that the Lord answers prays and knows what is best. One of the councilors afterwards mentioned that maybe my feelings were more inspired than frustrated because if I had not felt this way we would have never come up with this wonderful solution.
Thanks again for all who read and for all who left comments. I too love to oo, la, bump, buzz, or moo to a song to help the children use the melody, we did that today.
I will record the chorus ASL and post is as soon as I can get it ready.

2011 Primary Program

Goal: To use the scriptures for every song and testify more, use the scriptures as much as possible to teach the children that what we learn in our songs is what is found in the scriptures.

After much discusion with the Primary Presidency in our ward and taking into consideration the council given us from the Stake (and were directed that this was from the General Board) that our optional songs should not be from the Hymn book but from the Primary Songbook. Here are the songs we have chosen for 2011 (along with being assigned).

Jan: "If I Listen With My heart" refere to the 2011 Primary Program manual, "I know that the Scriptures are true"
Feb:  "I will Follow God's Plan" CSB pg164
Mar:  "Stand for the Right" CSB pg 159
April:  our choice "I'm trying to be like Jesus" CSB pg 78
May: "Praise to the Man" Hymn 27
June: our choices we are doing two songs-
"4th Article of Faith" CSB pg 124
"Scripture Power"  Found in the Oct 1987 Friend
July: "I love to See the Temple" CSB pg 95
Aug: "The Lord Game me a Temple" pg 153

Thoughts: Our choice to do "Scripture Power" came about a day where a young man in SR while doing our Thanks-giving activity in Singing Time, choice that he was thankful for scriptures and wanted to sing "Scripture Power". The pianist actually had a copy and we sang it. For a song that came out over 20 years ago I was amazed at how many of the children knew it and were singing with such enthusiastic. I was already out of Primary when this song came out and I've never actually learned it. The song is so old, yet still so loved by the children. Can you think of a song that is the same but not in the hymn book or Primary Songbook? I have been told that "To Bring the World His Truth" (Army of Heleman song, CSB 172) was not originally in the CSB but was later added because it was so loved. I don't know by my own knowledge if that is true but that is what I have been told.
After singing time that day I went in the back and talking to the Primary President and 1st Councilor I told them that while singing I had a thought that maybe this should be our 'our choice' song. They both agreed and said that they had had the same impression while the children where singing that song. The subject of this year is "I Know that the Scriptures are True" to know that they are true you must have a testimony that the scriptures posses a power that can be used in your life. "Scripture Power" teaches them that and stays with them.
I know doing an "extra" song is hard. It makes learning all your songs even harder. But I would like to invite you to do "Scripture Power" with your Primary this year. To infuse in a new generation of children that the scriptures have power that can be used in your life. Even if you chose not to do it for your program, teach it to them as just a song to learn this year.

last note- We do a number of musical numbers by small groups of children in our program. This year we are thinking that we are going to use songs that are about people in the scriptures ie: "Follow the Prophet", "Nephi's Courage", "Tell me the Stories of  Jesus", "Samuel tells of Baby Jesus", "Book of Mormon Stories", "A Young Man Prepared", there are more and we don't know which ones we are going to do, but we feel that there is teaching in having the children relate to the people in the scriptures to learn about how they can use the scriptures in their lives and have testimonies of their truth.
Thanks for stopping by, I'd love to hear thoughts about your plans for 2011, what songs you've chosen and why.

Preparing for 8 Song Race (Primary Program)

Our Primary Program is Sept. 19. That was 10 weeks from this last Sunday. We've leaved all 8 of the songs that the entire Primary will be singing. There is a special musical number that will be two children doing a duet. The 9-10 year old boys are singing Hymn 320, "The Priesthood of Our Lord" and the 9-10 year old girls are singing "Beautiful Savior" from the Primary songbook. I am helping with those songs, but they are mostly the project of the first counselor.
Back to the whole Primary,  we have learned:

  • I Know That My Savior Loves Me
  • He Sent His Son
  • Follow the Prophet (ASL on chorus)
  • The Holy Ghost
  • I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ
  • Come Follow Me (ASL)
  • I Feel My Savior's Love (ASL)
  • I Am a Child of God (sung once in English, German, and Spanish)
On Sunday I brought a chart to Primary. There is actually two charts, one for SR and one for JR. There are 8 spaces going left to right- for the 8 songs. And going up and down there are 10 spaces (for the ten weeks we have left till the program).
Last year I used the cooking analogy to teach preparedness for the program. This year is the analogy that we are preparing to run a race. When preparing to run a race you can't just get up one day and go to the race and run 10 miles just like that. You're body wouldn't be able to handle it. Instead you have to build up to running 10 miles. You start one day running 1 mile, then when you've mastered one mile you run that first mile and then run a second mile. When you've mastered those two miles you add a third mile. This process is continued until you can run all 10 miles. We are preparing for an 8 song race. We can't expect to stand up one Sunday, with no other prep, and expect to sing all 8 songs as though we have them mastered. Instead we need to build up to doing all 8 songs at once. This is where the chart comes in. Each week we meet we will sing all the songs we have already "passed off", and then "pass off" a new song. In order to "pass off" a song or in other words, show that they have mastered it, they must sing as though it is for the program, Stand together, sit together, sing loud, nice, and clearly, smile, hold still, stand up straight, do their ASL properly, and watch me. If they "pass off" a song the chart gets a sticker for that song that week. For example, this last Sunday we started. They "passed off" 'I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ'. Next week they will have to show that they still know 'I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ' and then "pass off" a new song. The following week they will have to do 'I Belong...', the new song, and then a newer song. Just like with preparing to run 10 miles, you always have to re-run those first miles again to get to your goal. You don't get up 10 days in a row, run 1 mile each day, and then on day 11 run 10 miles for the race. And each week they get a new sticker on their chart for showing that they still have those other songs mastered.
I am hoping that this gives the children a fun activity way to look forward to how fast the program is coming upon us. Since our program will be so early this year, when it is all over we will have many Sunday's to just do fun activities. But till then we need to focus and work hard. I hope this visual and analogy is enough to inspire the type of hard work that is needed.

ASL helps

LDS.ORG Primary Program Music Page

The Church's page for the primary program has the ASL video of a child signing the song for the required program songs. I've had people contact me about various songs to see if I will put them up for learning these songs.
I don't actually know ASL myself. I talk to the interpretors I know and I use online sources and figure out my own simple way of teaching the signs to the children. I think it is wrong to teach them had motions (beyond being a baby and just fun motions) for the songs that they will be singing over and over- unless they are learning actual sign languages.

That said I don't claim to have the best signs, only semi accurate signs. I am working on a 'Come Follow Me' simple signs for children, just for the first verse. Since this was not in my plan for our children, this is taking me longer to get it together. I will post it here when I get to that point.

"I Am a Child of God" Spanish

SR primary is learning to see the first verse and chorus of "I Am a Child of God" in Spanish.

This is Brother Ryan Despain in our ward singing it for the children to learn from. Unlike the German video I didn't  put the words phonetically, I used the actual Spanish spellings. I broke them up either the way the Spanish Primary book did or if there was a break that I felt the children needed to see. SR primary can mostly read well enough to follow the words. They were very jealous when they learned that JR primary was learning German, but thought it was the COOLEST that they were going to learn Spanish.

Primary Binders

I made binders for all the teachers (with the Primary President's permission and with primary budget funds). They have all of the songs we are doing in them, they are in protective covers, and have a pocket for putting extras in as the Primary President deems the teacher needs them. The idea is, while learning the songs the teachers can follow along and their subs can too. I did them up last year but no where as nice. Also once we have the program completed we will put the program in them and that will be what the teachers follow along with during the program. We figured that the investment was worth making if we use them for a few years and aren't making three extra copies of the music throughout the year. One copy made of the music.

2010 Primary Program

I was asked by our Primary President a few weeks ago to pick what we are doing for the songs that we get to pick. I realized that it is now the new year, and although I let the Primary President know what songs- I've never done a post on it.
  • JANUARY- "I Know My Savior Loves Me", its it the 2010 guideline book or download it off the church website.
  • FEBRUARY- "He Sent His Son" CSB pg 34
  • MARCH- "Follow the Prophet" CSB pg 110 We are planing a joint Singing Time/Sharing Time to teach the verses of this song. We will also be doing ASL for the chorus of this song. As we get a little closer I will post a video.
  • APRIL- "The Church of Jesus Christ" CSB pg 77 (I belong to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I know who I am, I know God's plan....)
  • MAY*- "I Feel My Savior's Love" CSB pg 74 We will be doing ASL to this song.
  • JUNE- "The Holy Ghost" CSB pg 105
  • JULY- "Come, Follow Me" Hymn book pg 116
  • AUGUST*- "I Am a Child of God" CSB pg 2 We are planing to do the first verse twice. On the second time through it will be sung in a language other than English. I haven't decided if it will be Spanish or German (we have a family from Germany in our ward and a number of RMs who served in German, plus we are a military ward so several families have lived in Germany). I also haven't decided if I will be teaching it to all the children or just to a small group who will then sing it in the other language.
What are some of the songs that your Primaries' will be doing for their choice songs? Are any of ya'll doing anything special for any of the songs and the program? Its so hard to get refocused on this years program, since it feels like we just finished the program. I'm hoping to make this year easier on the children so that we can spend more time having some fun activities and more overall reviewing. Last year's group of songs was so heavy and hard for a lot of the children.

Primary Program ALL Over

Yippy!!! I am so happy its all over. The program is the bane of my calling. But the children did wonderful. There is something to be said for the fact that children sing and behave so much better when they have an audience. They will be so rowdy for every practice and then be almost perfect while their parents are watching. The songs all went well. I had to laugh over the Sunbeams special musical number, "Jesus Wants me for a Sunbeam." They did wonderful, didn't jump and were all such good little singers. But what was funny was all the other children were so jealous that the Sunbeams got to sing that song and they didn't.
After the program I did my "Happy Family" lesson. Both primaries loved it, they got into it for different reasons. JR had more fun actually saying the new words and singing them. While SR primary had the most fun trying to guess what language the words belonged to. They had were really getting into singing the fun tune. For a primary activity day coming up we are do a theme of "Children Around the World". It should prove to be really fun and cute. After today's lesson the primary president asked me to keep my visuals so that I can use them again for the activity day.
Again I am so happy we are done with the program. Now I have to decide all what we are doing for the rest of the year and for next year.

A Happy Family

Sunday is our program. I am going to be sooooo HAPPY when its over. After the program I want to do something that is completely different. Sing songs that we haven't all year long. I'm going to teach them "A Happy Family" song. As I teach it I'm going to show pictures of my family. Instead of just learning the song as it is written we are also going to learn how to say mother/daddy, sister/brother, and grandma/grandpa in other languages and substitute them in. I've been asking our ward for help.
Example of what we are doing:
English: I love Mother, She loves me. We love Daddy yes sir-ree. He loves us and so you see, we are a happy family.
Any other language: I love ______, She loves me. We love ______ yes sir-ree. He loves us and so you see, we are a happy family.
  • Spanish: Mother- Madre, Daddy- Padre,
  • Hawaiian: Mother- Makuahine (-hene), Daddy- Makuakane (-koni)
  • Filipino: Mother- Nanay (Nani), Daddy- Tatay (Tati)
  • Arabic: Mother- Ommie, Daddy- Ebbie
  • Finnish: Mother- Emo (Amo), Daddy-Taatto
  • German: Mother-Mutter, Daddy-Fatter
Ask around in your own wards to find out what languages people know. Originally I wanted to learn the whole song in various languages, however when translating a languages they don't always fit into the rythm of the song anymore and I didn't want to mess with that.
Other idea
  • have the children draw pictures of them mom and dad and hold them up when they sing mom or dad
  • contact some of the children's parents and ask them to bring a picture of their ____, then use that for the person in the song.
  • do it in ASL, learn it on the church site.
  • Use children's names, this can be really good if you only love two kids to sing the welcome song to. "I love Kalie she loves me, we love Caleb, yes sir-ree....." You could go around the whole room and eventually sing everyone's name. It would be a way to get to know all the children's names.
Good luck. I hope this works out and the children find it fun.

Cooking Up a Program

Here is what I'm doing......
  1. First find baking containers and bottles. (Flour, sugar, vanilla, baking soda, powder, spices). You will need to find at least one container for each thing you want to work on. These could be songs you want to work on, or do as I am and have them be elements of singing that need to be worked on. Your elements may be different than mine due to your primary's needs.
  2. Label you containers: I like to use construction paper and markers, you could also print them off the computer. I taped them onto the container. The following are the elements I chose=Pitch, Smile, Correct Words, Sign Language, Sit and Stand Together, Diction, Holding Still, and Watch Chorister.
  3. Place labels on each container, I just taped them so I could easily take them back if I choose.
  4. During primary, talk about why we need all the ingredients to make a good ____ (cookie, cake, whatever you want to use as an example), then discuse what do you need to make that thing. After that liken baking/cooking unto a good program. You need everything to make a good ____ and you need everything to make a good primary program. Talk about each thing and why its needed.
  5. Sing through songs from your program and while singing them practice each thing. I am going to have the children pick one of our ingredients for us to work on. As we perfect that thing we get to add it to our mixing bowel.
  6. Supposidly once everything is mixed in the children should be experts performers and ready for the program.
  7. Can have a visual or a treat for the children like paper cookies or something.
I will do this the week before we have the "judges" come in to give the children feed back.
